Join Our Reading Club
Do you like reading books and then discussing them with friends?
We invite you to join our Reading club. Each month we will meet and discuss a book that is thematically related to the work we do.
Our first meeting will be on April 6th at 6.30 pm. We will discuss “The fruit of knowledge” by Liv Strömquist. The inspiration for this choice came from the organization of the event called Health: From women to women where one of the topics is female sexual and reproductive health.
The reading club meetings will be held in our office in Plovdiv – Kapitan Raicho Street (next to DM shop). The places are limited so we invite you to register for participation here: https://forms.gle/dKZsLmgbwxWJUUzb8
More on the book “The Fruit of Knowledge” by Liv Strömquist from the Bulgarian publisher “Zhanet 45”:
What is it accepted to name a “female sexual organ”? Why do people have so irreconcilable, unambiguous, contradictory attitude towards this part of the human body? Why does not the word “vulva” exist in our everyday language and menstruation is a taboo? How did opinions on biological gender change throughout the centuries?
Looking for the answers to these questions Liv Strömquist explores Antiquity and The Middle Ages, Zigmund Freud and Jean-Paul Sartre, “The Sleeping Beauty” and Swedish pop music, internet forums and newspapers front pages. Thus she constructs a cumulative image of the organ that Gustave Courbet calls “the birth of the world”.
