The lack of in-depth sociological research on the problems and needs of women in Bulgaria makes it impossible to pursue targeted and consistent policies to promote equality. This can be observed in the National Strategy for the Promotion of Equality between Women and Men 2021-2030, on which Ekaterina Karavelova Foundation published a critical position, as we believe that it does not offer adequate solutions to real problems on the ground.
Relying solely on NSI and Eurostat statistics fails to reflect the daily challenges, normalized inequalities and intersectional discrimination faced by women across the country, with whom we work on a daily basis. Our experience shows that the problems are far from limited to the topic of domestic violence, but many of them remain invisible and unrecognized. In the period 2021 – 2023 Ekaterina Karavelova Foundation will conduct qualitative sociological research to shed light on the problems and needs of women from different social groups from all 6 planning regions in the country. 42 in-depth biographical interviews will be conducted and an analytical report will be published. In addition three reports will be published on the topic of women’s participation in politics in Bulgaria.

The project “Study of the needs and problems of women in Bulgaria” is implemented with financial support from the Active Citizens Fund of Bulgaria, financial support is provided by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the EEA Financial Mechanism (https://www.activecitizensfund.bg). The main goal of the project “Study of the needs and problems of women in Bulgaria” is to conduct a qualitative sociological research to shed light on the problems and needs of women from different social groups from all 6 planning regions in the country.
